How to Prep Apples Like a Pro

Got a lot of apples to plow through? Here's the chef's secret to doing it quickly.

Step 1

Starting around where you think the seeds might be, start slicing the sides off the apple. One down.

Step 2

One more.

Step 3

Short sides too.

Step 4

Discard the core.

Step 5

Lay each piece flat-side down.

Step 6

Slice each piece, leaving the apples reasonably together.

Step 7

Use your knife to straighten the sides of each piece.

Step 8

Then, press down with your hand to fan the slices out.

Step 9

Slide your knife blade under the slices.

Step 10

Then, pick up the slices …

Step 11

 … and arrange them in your tart shell. 

Step 12

Perfect. Ready to bake!
